This Whitsunday Islands sea kayaking adventure has been designed to give students and teachers the ultimate wilderness experience in stunning surrounds along with learning about the worlds marine ecosystems. We form two base camps at the two best sites for kayaking, snorkelling and walking on the islands so only break camp twice, travelling between our sites by water taxi. This ensures we get to best utilise our time with engaging activities and enhanced risk management and safety protocols. The journey includes challenging kayaking legs, spectacular snorkelling and breathtaking island walks to provide a rewarding experience for all travellers.

On arrival at Proserpine Airport you will be met and transferred to your accommodation for the night. Tonight students will be camping and teachers will stay in cabins next to the tents. (students to bring their own sleeping bag). Depending on your arrival time we will have the afternoon to explore Airlie Beach and the boardwalk as well as heading into the local town for supplies. The boardwalk is accessible from our accommodation and the walk to town takes around 25 minutes. Airlie Beach has a large lagoon we can swim in with sea views, which is situated by the main street. This afternoon we will have a safety and gear check with our crew before heading out to the Whitsunday Islands tomorrow. Whitsunday Islands National Park is home to 74 islands and part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, famed for its superlative natural beauty, outstanding examples of reef ecosystem development, evolutionary history and amazing diversity. The majority of these majestic islands are uninhabited national park islands, all with the Great Barrier Reef and fringing coral reefs at their doorstep.

Meals:  D

After breakfast at our accommodation you will be picked up and transported to Shute Harbour, (approximately 15 minutes’ drive), Here the group will meet their kayaking guides who will run through the plan for the day. The kayaks & supplies are loaded onto a mini barge which takes paddlers out to breathtaking Whitehaven Beach on the south east of Whitsunday Islands. This 7km long beach on Whitsunday Island was voted one of the TOP 50 beaches in the world and is famous for its stunning views, cyrstal claer aqua waters and pristine white silica sand. The sand contains 98% silica meaning it is extremely fine and soft, with some comparing the consistency to that of baby powder. Because of the silica, the sand doesn’t retain heat and makes it a fantastic place to walk on barefoot, even on a hot day. We will make this amazing spot our basecamp for the next few days. The group will set up camp and spend the rest of the day exploring nearby Haslewood Island, here off Chalkie’s Beach you can explore some beautiful snorkelling areas. Additionally, there are easily accessible walking trails from the Whitehaven Beach Campsite that we can explore in between our kayaking. Overnight camping Whitehaven Beach

Meals:  B,L,D

We wake to a spectacular sunrise and have a briefing over breakfast. We climb on board our kayaks and head north, following the east coast of Whitsunday Island, paddling the full length of Whitehaven Beach. We learn as we go, with our skills improving after training from our professional kayaking guides. This is a 16-kilometre return trip. We can stop off at the entrance of the iconic Hill Inlet and walk up to the lookout leads to breathtaking views of the turquoise water and swirling silica sand. Migratory birds, stingrays and sea turtles are often viewed from here. We can all enjoy a relaxing lunch on the beach below before paddling back to their campsite for the night.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we head South from our base camp through the Solway Pass and explore the beautiful Chance Bay. Situated on the southern side of Whitsunday Island., Chance Bay shares the same beautiful white silica sand as Whitehaven Beach and is more private with wonderful snorkelling opportunities directly from the beach itself. From here, a rainforest walking track stretches back to Whitehaven Beach, with stunning views across the southern end of Whitsunday Island.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we break camp after breakfast and board a water taxi for our journey North to Maureen's Cove on Hook Island. Nestled beneath the rugged hills of Hook Island, this camping area features pandanus palms and beach gardenias with shady, spacious surrounds, perfect for our group. Fringing reefs feature along both the eastern and western edges of Maureen's Cove making it the perfect place for a morning or afternoon snorkle. This afternoon we will set up camp and get familiar with our surrounds.

Meals:  B,L,D

Each morning we wake to uninterrupted views across the reef to the Coral Sea. The next two days are spent exploring the northern end of Hook Island, with its many coral reefs. We will head East out towards the beautiful Langford Island and Bai Hai. Langford Island, near Hayman Island is a popular spot with sailors, divers and snorkelers. It is a relatively small, but features a long sand spit that all but disappears at high tide. This is an excellent spot for a picnic, swimming and snorkelling. The majority of fish life is small, but abundant. We are protected from all but the strongest wind conditions and moderate tidal currents at all but slack tides. Snorkelers will enjoy the ability to snorkel straight off the length of the beach, with the best areas to explore being closest to the island. If conditions allow we will circumnavigate the world renowned Hayman Island and explore the beautiful Blue Pearl Bay.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we wake to the last day on the islands. We break camp and wait for our water taxi transfer. If the water taxi pick up is early, (this is dependent on the tides), we will be able to get dropped off at South Molle Island and from here paddle back to Shute Harbour. The Molle Islands walking tracks offer spectacular views, traversing rain-forest, grasslands, open eucalyptus forest and an ancient Ngaro stony quarry to lookouts across the Whitsunday Passage. On arrival at Shute Harbour we transfer back to our accommodation at the local tourist park and enjoy our last meal together as we recap on our amazing adventure.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we rise for breakfast and transfer to Cairns airport for our flight back home.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
