THE FOLLOWING ITINERARY IS A SAMPLE OF A PAST PROJECT. THE SCHOOL YOU ASSIST WILL BE DIFFERENT TO THE ONE IN THIS ITINERARY, WHICH COULD ALSO MEAN THE TREK IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT, BUT YOU WILL GET A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT A TREK + COMMUNITY PROJECT WILL ENTAIL.

You would be hard pressed to find a better introduction to Nepal than by joining this expedition. From the atmospheric squares and temples of Kathmandu Valley we travel to the adventure capital of Nepal, Pokhara. Located on the banks of a huge lake and at the foot of the Annapurna range, which stretches like a giant wall the views in all directions, are incredible. It is here where we venture out into the Himalaya on a fully supported seven day trek escaping Nepal's tourist trails to explore the forests which flank the lofty Annapurna peaks. The trek is designed to provide outstanding mountain views whilst getting away from the tea-house trails and into villages that have not felt the impact of tourism and have subsequently retained much of their traditional charm. We will follow trails through oak and rhododendron forest and camp in serene locations that showcase dramatic views of the Annapurna range. This provides the opportunity to learn about the culture, traditions, social structure and way of life in rural Nepal. You will be greeted like family and offered a warm welcome in the village of Jilbarang (1500m), the site of our three day Community Project. We will be refurbishing the local school building by painting a classroom both internally and externally and re-plastering the walls where required. (Exact project specifics will be provided in early 2015.) It will be equally hard work as it will be fascinating, educational and uplifting in every sense. To assist us there will be help from eager and appreciative local school kids and from a team of professional labourers who will ensure we complete the work we start on time and on budget. After completing the project we will bid farewell and trek to the trail head where we return by private vehicle to Pokhara then onto Kathmandu for an opportunity to do some last minute shopping before our return flight home. This is a learning service adventure to get excited over!

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
CARBON NEUTRAL
World Expeditions Schools absorbs the cost of credits mitigating 100% of the unavoidable carbon emissions. This is our commitment to being part of the solution to climate crises.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate

The trek can be undertaken by anyone with a reasonable level of health and fitness. For the community project part of your trip you will not require a certain level of strength or physical ability, just an enthusiastic and positive attitude. A project manager will direct and distribute the workloads amongst participants on a daily basis. There is no pressure to exert yourself physically beyond your limits during the project but you should be prepared to give 4 -6 hours of physical labour each day. A certain level of fitness will be required where there is trekking involved. This trip involves trekking for up to six or seven hours a day at a steady pace. These trips do not spend time at altitudes above 4000m and are usually a week in duration. You will need a reasonable level of fitness, to enjoy the outdoors and be in good health. * Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic type exercise, (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for three months leading up to your trip. For trekking, hill walking with a daypack in variable weather conditions is also recommended. The itinerary will take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms.
