Overview

 Highlights

  • Summit North Africa's highest of Mt Toubkal
  • Climb the nearby Ouanoukrim peak
  • Traditional Berber villages
  • Gardens, mosques, palaces and the souqs of Marrakesh

This outstanding journey takes us out into the heart of Morocco's rugged Atlas Mountain range, an impressive landscape dotted with remote Berber villages and narrow green valleys. Our Berber guides and muleteers lead us to the summits of Morocco's two highest peaks - Mt Toubkal and nearby Ouanoukrim - traversing high passes, steep ridges and lush valleys where goat herds and traditional villages bring life to the striking landscape. At 4167m, Mt Toubkal is the highest mountain in North Africa and a challenge for even the fittest trekker - however, our climbs of Toubkal and Ouanoukrim are non-technical and do not require prior mountaineering experience. Our adventure ends in the unforgettable oasis city of Marrakesh, where we’ll explore the city’s bustling markets, mosques and ancient medina.

On arrival you will be met and transferred from Marrakesh Airport in the direction of the High Atlas and via Asni to the starting point of the trek. Here we will meet our muleteers, and our bags are loaded onto mules. After a picnic lunch in Aguersioual, we start our trek up to Matate valley. A steady, but easy climb takes us to a grazing plateau surrounded with juniper trees. Elevations between 1700 m (5100 ft) and 2100 m (6300 ft). Walking time: 2-3 hours Driving time: 1.5 hours

Today a short climb leads will take us up Tizi n'Oudite at 2200m (6600 ft), before descending through a juniper forest to the Azaden valley. Great views of the colourful villages of Id Aissa, Tizi Zougaghen and Tiziane will be visible during this walk. We then continue up the valley to Id Aissa with it’s minaret dominating the valley. In the afternoon we will walk up the Assif n’Ouarhou towards Tizi n’Tagdalte. Walking time: 5 - 7 hours

We leave Tizi Oussem and head further up along the valley of Oussem. Slowly we ascend up to Azib Iminouatss and follow the trail to the small and narrow pasture of Azib Tamsoult at 2160 m (6480 ft). Before lunch we make a short visit to the waterfalls of Ighouliden, and then hike for one hour higher up to Azib Tzikert and set up the camp Walking time: approximately 4 hours

After apprx. half an hour we reach the large mule trail and head to the mountain chain of Aguelzim. A zigzag trail leads up a couloir of some 400m of altitude to a first pass with a panoramic view to Tizi Oussem and the Haouz plain. The trail ascends another 100 m (300 ft) of altitude, then we reach the 3600 m (10800 ft) high pass Tizi Aguelzim. We enjoy a good view to Djebel Toubkal and then descend on to the trail - quite rocky in places - and onwards to the Toubkal Camp. Walking time: Approximately 6 hoiurs

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we start early -at approximately 6.00 am -for our attempt on Toubkal. The summit of Toubkal is not technical; it is walkable right up to the top. The climb itself is strenuous as you will be ascending, and descending, over 1000 m (3000 ft) today. It begins with a steep ascent at the beginning through a narrow valley with lots of rocks and stones, vegetation is very rare at this altitude. Then the trail climbs steadily and after another steep ascent you reach the large ridge from where you reach easily the summit -the culminating point of Northern Africa and Morocco, the Toubkal peak of 3975 m (11 925 ft)! From the summit you will enjoy the spectacular views and the superb panorama. The descent follows the line of ascent back down to the base camp which will take approximately 3 hours. Back at camp, your cook will have a hearty late lunch ready for you. Afterwards you might feel like taking a nap and a rest. Walking time: Approx. 6 to 7 hrs (3 to 4 hrs up and 2 to 3 hrs down)

Meals:  B,L,D

Today will truly test your endurance, and this climb is only an option for those feeling fit and well acclimatised. We climb from Neltner camp up in direction of Tizi n'Ouanoums, then we follow the trail to Tizi n'Ouagane at 3780 m. From this pass it is an approx. 20 minute steep climb up to the ridge of the mountain, then we follow the ridge to the summit of 4088 m. Here we will see a nice panoramic view (if good weather) of the Toubkal summit, Tazararte plateau or even to Anti Atlas and Tizi n'Test region as well as the valley of Souss. Descent on the same route to the Tizi n'Ouagane. From here, if you are feeling fit and well acclimatized, we can climb another optional peak, the Igher n'Abdellai (approx. 1 hour in addition from/to the pass). From the summit we have a good view to the Lac ifni. Head back to the pass and descend to Neltner camp. (Apprx. 6-7 hours walk, including optional 2nd climb). Overnight tent

Meals:  B,L,D

Early in the morning trek down to Aremd and Imlil. You follow the same mule trail to reach the roadhead after approximately 4 to 5 hours of walking. After a picnic lunch you meet the driver and are transferred back to Marrakech. Approximately 1 ½ hrs of driving. In Marrakech you will have time to visit the famous main place Djemaa el Fna, the souks, the one or the other of the monuments or to relax in one of the tiny cafés around Djemaa el Fna, sip a glass of mint tea and watch the sunset and all the thrilling coming and going at the place. Overnight hotel.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we are led by our expert city guide (not your trek leader) to discover the soul of Marrakesh. We walk at first directly to the Bab ed Debbarh where we visit the tanneries. Then we continue to the Medersa Ben Youssef for a visit (entry fee included). The Ben Youssef Medersa, an Islamic school attached to the Ben Youssef Mosque, is home to some of the most beautiful art and architecture in Marrakesh. The medersa, where students memorized the Qur'an, was founded by the Merenid Sultan Abou el Hassan in the 14th century. It was, however, almost completely rebuilt under the Saadians and it is they who made their distinctive mark in its architecture and art. After this visit we walk through the souks to the place Djemaa el Fna and finally we stop in front of the Koutoubia Mosque where the guided tour ends at approx. 12:00. Dinner and overnight in a local hotel.

Meals:  B,L,D

Transfer to Marrakesh Airport for return flight home or continue with more touring of Morocco.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.

Grading

Moderate

A moderate graded challenge involves activity for up to 6 or 8 hours a day at a steady pace. On a trekking challenge such as this you need to be in general good health and have a good level of fitness. Prior trekking experience is not necessary, although you would be expected to be comfortable with the outdoors and camping. The fitter you are, the more easily you will adjust and enjoy yourself. Before departure we suggest aerobic-type exercise, which increases and assists your breathing. We recommend that for about two to three months prior to departure you try to exercise most days for 30 - 45 minutes to assist leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. Take every opportunity to walk up hills or stairs carrying your daypack, a perfect opportunity to also break in new trekking shoes before your challenge.
