Xin chao! Welcome to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. You are greeted by your driver at Tan Son Nhat International Airport for your transfer to the hotel. Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city of Vietnam. It is the bustling and dynamic economic capital and the cultural trendsetter of the country, yet within the teeming metropolis you will find the timeless traditions and beauty of an ancient culture. Yur program today includes a visit the Reunification Palace, the former residence of the President of South Vietnam. You can visit the “War Room” from where the South Vietnamese forces were controlled, and the room where the North Vietnamese army finally took control in the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. We continue with a walk to other iconic colonial landmarks including the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office. Lunch will be taken at a local restauarant (pay direct). In the late afternoon you will meet your tour leader in the hotel lobby for a trip briefing before heading out to a local restaurant for a welcome dinner.

This morning we transfer by bus to Hoc Mon. From here we start cycling through rubber plantations and rice fields (approx 25km) to the historic Cu Chi Tunnels. After an introductory video, viewing various mantraps, the remains of an American tank and numerous bomb craters, you will spend the next hour exploring the maze of tunnels to see how the Viet Cong survived in this underground network. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant nearby. We return to Ho Chi Minh in the afternoon. Rest and refresh before dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight hotel, Saigon

This morning we depart for the Mekong Delta (95km, approx 2.5 hours drive). We arrive at Cai Be and board a local boat for a visit to Cai Be floating market. We'll continue to Tân Phong Island for biking/walking on village paths where we can witness daily life: orchard, school, church, pagoda, traditional houses... On the way, we will stop to learn how the locals wave the dried water-hyacinth to make many products: baskets, bags, hats, wallets, shoes... A rowboat will then take us deeper into the countryside on smaller canals and waterways. Lunch is served at a local homestay. We return to our boat to cross the Mekong River, our destination, An Bình Island. We travel on Muong Lo handmade canal to check in at Út Trinh homestay. You will have time to freshen up before cooking some special dishes with the members of local family. We’ll enjoy dinner & overnight in the homestay. (simple local accommodation, twin or triple share)

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast and farewelling our hosts we walk through the village to a local workshop to see how to make rice paper, coconut candy, pop-rice, and enjoy some sweets with a cup of hot tea. We will then take a boat trip to visit the brick kilns where we can see how the locals create beautiful pottery. Our boat will pass floating villages and we will see how to farm catfish on Mekong river. We also have a chance to visit Vinh Long market in the township which is a fantastic opportunity to see fish, shrimps, prawns, crabs, snakes, rice-field rats, tropical fruits, vegetables. The exploration of the Mekong will end at Vinh Long city where we meet the bus and transfer to Can Tho. Overnight hotel in Can Tho.

Meals:  B,L,D

We will wake up early this morning to go on a boat trip to visit the Cai Rang floating market. The market is not what it used to be but is still worthy of a visit. We return to the hotel for breakfast. Following breakfast we'll take in the daily activities of the locals who live along the Mekong canals. We'll visit Binh Thuy Ancient House, a rare and well-preserved example in Can Tho City of a characteristic Mekong Delta house. Here, you will find not only an ancient structure demonstrating a unique combination of French and Vietnamese design features, but also a lush garden with a wide range of plants, including orchids and a record cactus. We then meet the vehicle for our return to Ho Chi Mong City. Dinner and overnight Ho Chi Minh

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young citizens to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
