This program is a tailor made journey for the students of Elisabeth Murdoch. After exploring the cultural and historical highlights of Kathmandu we travel North to the Shree Loki School, home to our service project. This school was badly affected by the 2015 earthquakes and in need of infrastructure and support. We spend 3 days in total here on a project to be determined over the coming months. After a hand over ceremony with the local community we then embark on the next phase of our journey, a fully supported camping based trek to the sacred lakes of Gosainkund in the Helambu region. Although only a day's drive from Kathmandu, this region is relatively isolated and predominantly inhabited by the Tamangs and Helambu Sherpas, who originated in Tibet just to the north. A highlight of our trek is a visit to Kyanjin Gompa (3800m), a Buddhist monastery in a spectacular sub-alpine setting. From Kyanjin we traverse several passes that afford impressive views enroute to the sacred lakes of Gosainkund. A trek in this region affords brilliant views of the mighty peaks of Langtang (7234m) and Ganesh (7446m), as well as a sprawl of endless 6000m+ summits. Langtang not only offers stunning views, inspiring high altitude lakes and the opportunity for authentic cultural interaction in a less travelled region of the Himalaya, but an opportunity for us to make a real difference to a community in need.

Meals:  D

Today we will embark on a half day visiting the cultural and historical highlights of Kathmandu including the two most important World Heritage Listed spiritual sites: Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most sacred Hindu temple and an important cremation site; and Boudhanath, the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal and the most sacred Tibetan Buddhist shrine outside of Tibet. Overnight Radisson Hotel *Today lunch and dinner is at your own expense

Meals:  B

After an early breakfast we drive north from Kathmandu to Gomba Danda. Parts of the road are unsealed and the condition of the road often depends upon the monsoon season. On arrival we will trek for 2 hours into our project site, the Shree Loki School. We will be rewarded with panoramic views of the Trisuli River valley and the high peaks of the Ganesh Range. We will encounter groups of girls and young women who spend hours in the forest collecting leaves that they carry back to the village to feed the family buffalo, an important animal that ensures the fields can be ploughed for the new crops. After the welcome program, we settle into the camp near the school. Overnight wilderness camp

Meals:  B,L,D

The school was affected by the 2015 earthquakes. Project work will involve physical work that may include plastering the classroom walls, painting the school and ground levelling of the playground. The village school needs assistance in many ways, and we will discuss with the school committee the possible ways the group can help. You will need enthusiasm and a desire to help, but no special skills are needed. There will be local tradesman to show you how to achieve your tasks. During this time you will also have time to relax and play games such as soccer or hopscotch with the local children. Whilst we are working our crew will prepare 3 hearty cooked meals per day. Overnight wilderness camp

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we will finish our service work and join a hand over ceremony with the local community. The local community will want to turn out and thank you for the great work who have completed during the service days. We say farewell to our new friends and board our vehicle for the drive to Syabrubesi and the start of our Langtang trek. Overnight wilderness camp

Meals:  B,L,D

We cross through the village of Thulo Syabru and descend to the Langtang Kola. Slowly the trail climbs gently through the forest with the river flowing beside us. The forest becomes sparser and drier on this side of the river, consisting mainly of scrub oaks and nettles. Finally we climb steeply on a good trail to Rimche and on to our campsite for the night.

Meals:  B,L,D

We continue to follow the Langtang Khola climbing steeply through hemlocks, oaks, maples and rhododendron forest to the national park checkpoint at Ghora Tabela (2970m). Beautiful views of Langtang Lirung (7225m) can be seen from here. The trail ascends gradually, as the valley becomes wider and we pass many mani stones, water-driven prayer wheels and scattered Tamang villages before arriving in Langtang village.

Meals:  B,L,D

Passing through the village of Langtang we climb gradually past yak pastures and the small villages of Mumdu and Sindum. After crossing a wooden cantilever bridge over Langtang Khola, we reach a wider valley scattered with large boulders to a moraine. Here we gain the first views of Kyanjin Gompa and the dramatic icefall flowing from Langtang Lirung and Langtang Kinshung (6781m) to the north. Our route weaves through large boulders before a short descent to Kyanjin Gompa. The scenery is spectacular here and one of the highlights of the itinerary.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we have a full rest day, very important for acclimatisation. The setting is stunning, a lovely village with incredible views of the mountains. We can spend our day going for an acclimatisation walk and exploring the nearby village as well as spending time reflecting on the program to date.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we retrace our route along the Langtang Khola to Langtang village and on to Ghora Tabela (3020m). The trail is for the most part downhill, descending to Lama Hotel and our camp for the night.

Meals:  B,L,D

Following the same route until we reach the upper trail on the ridge we arrive at the pleasant village of Thulo Syabru. This gives us an opportunity to gain an insight into the tradition, culture and custom of the local Tamang community.

Meals:  B,L,D

Passing a school and army post, we proceed up a steep hill above the village to Dursagang. After Dursagang, the trail is less steep and largely forested to the top of the ridge at Fhulung Danda. The only sign of human habitation are the occasional shepherd huts. The trail eventually levels as it crosses the head of the valley and after passing the ridge we arrive at Sing Gompa.

Meals:  B,L,D

Following a rugged trail we climbs steeply up the ridge, with dramatic views of Himal Chuli (7893m)and Manaslu (8156m)as our backdrop. To the west Ganesh Himal(7406m) rises up behind and to the north across the valley is Langtang Lirung. The area on the northern slope is a sanctuary for the red panda (locally known as the cat bear), an endangered species. We pass a few huts in the high pasture of Laurebina and cross a ridge for our first view of the holy lakes. Gosainkund is a protected area where the killing of animals, lighting of wood fires and grazing of goats is prohibited. There are about a dozen lakes in Gosiankund Basin, the most prominent being Saraswati Kunda, Bhairav Kunda and Gosiankund. According to legend, Shiva created the lake when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after consuming poison. There are stone shelters at Gosiankund used by pilgrims who visit to worship and bathe during the full-moon festival each August.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today the setting for our rest day is nothing short of spectacular. We can walk around the lakes and explore the high Alpine camp gaining views of the Annapurna range and Manaslu.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we start our steady descent, losing over 2000mtrs over the course of the day heading towards the road head at Dunche.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we wave goodbye to the mountains and meet our vehicle and driver for the journey back to Kathmandu. On arrival in Kathmandu we will check into our hotel and head out for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant to celebrate our achievements.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning is at leisure to prepare and pack your luggage before making your eay to the airport for your flight to Melbourne

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.

Grading

Moderate

On a moderate trek physical activity will generally not exceed eight hours in a day, and altitudes generally not exceeding 5,500 metres. On a moderate adventure the physical activity is sustained and travelers should be comfortable with occasional rough terrain. At any stage of a moderate trek you can expect long steep climbs and descents and a wide range of weather conditions. An example of an average day on moderate trek could include several ascents and descents of 500 metres or more, level ground is rare in the mountains. To prepare for a moderate trek you should begin training at least three months before your departure. As a benchmark, an hour of aerobic exercise three times per week would be considered a minimum requirement. The best preparation is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. If you can manage a couple of valley floor to ridgeline ascents per bushwalk, albeit with stops along the way, you know you can cope with a moderately graded trek. Speed is not important, stamina, confidence and rhythm are.
