Along with the incredible experience of witnessing the animals in their natural habitat, the focus of your adventure is the meaningful service work that you will complete at a local school in the foothills of Mount Meru. You will spend 3 to 4 days working alongside the local community completing multiple tasks that will not only be personally rewarding, but positively impact the students and teachers at the school and the local villages. Jambo! After many months of planning and preparing, your adventure is finally here! Please make your way to the airport for your flight to Tanzania.

Arriving into Kilimanjaro International Airport. On arrival the team will be met and transferred into Arusha to their accomodation. Teachers & Guide will review the "Teachers' Companion booklet" to discuss the itinerary and dietary/medical information of the students. Due to late arrival a buffet dinner will be available and welcome briefing will occur before check-in and then it is time for a good rest and shower before departing to the community project for tomorrow. Meals: Group dinner Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single room

Meals:  D

Following breakfast the team will be picked up and transferred to Le Manyatta Village, just north of Arusha for community project & immersion at Matim Nursery & Primary School. Le Manyatta means "protected place". This village is a primarily Maasai community and the team will have a chance to explore the village and the beautiful surrounds of the school in the shadows of Mt Meru. They will meet local families to learn about their way of life and can get involved in a sporting match, games and activities with the local children. Upon arrival, the team will receive an orientation to the school and their accommodation before starting work after lunch. Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single rooms with extra teacher accommodation near the Headmaster's house.

Meals:  B,L,D

The aim of the projects is to assist local tradesmen with whatever the school is planning to do next. The Primary School receives some minor funding from the government, but this mostly supports teacher wages, therefore the school community relies on outside help to improve the facilities for the many students attending. The school community are therefore very thankful for the contribution the team will be making, (sample project could be "build some new pathways around the school to minimise dust induced chest and eye infections for the children and staff, and help with the construction of a new verandah). Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single rooms with extra teacher accommodation near the Headmaster's house.

Meals:  B,L,D

Whilst at the community the team's accommodation is about 200 meters from the school at Lico Lodge which is a local guest house with ten rooms, basic showers and there is extra accommodation for teachers at the Headmaster's house if needed. All meals will be prepared by the community under the watchful eye of our Guides, and include traditional, local cuisine. After our last day of helping, we say goodbye to our newfound friends this evening and thank them for their hospitality. We will also have a trek briefing tonight and pack for our trek starting tomorrow. Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single room

Meals:  B,L,D

The team will be picked up from their project and transferred to begin trekking from Momella Gate, (1500m). There are two trek routes from here: 1. zig zag through small tracks into an open area of Arusha National Park where it's possible to see giraffe, buffalo, etc and then slowly meander through cloud forest on good single-track pathways. There are numerous places to stop for photos as the team make their way up to Miriakamba Hut (2514m) where the team will stay overnight. 2. follow the 4 wheel drive track through the forest, (listen hard and you may hear the dark-coated Colobus monkeys). The team can stop for the "classic group photo" under wild fig tree arch. They will then continue across the Jekukumia River and then break for lunch at Njeku View Point to see the beautiful Momella Lakes and vast plains beyond. The final part of today’s journey is to Miriakamba Hut (2514m) where the team will stay overnight. Meals: B, L, D Accom: 4 bedded dorms for students. Teachers of the same gender will share a dorm.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today the team will begin trekking through the glades and forest and may be lucky enough to see the black and white monkeys. They will reach Mgongo Tembo (Elephant Ridge) before continuing their journey to Saddle Hut (3570m), where they will have lunch. Depending on the weather the team will enjoy impressive views of tomorrow's route. In the afternoon, the team should slowly ascend for 45 minutes to the summit of Little Meru (3820m) to help them acclimatise for tomorrow's summit. Little Meru is a great place to sit for an hour and enjoy the views. The team will have an early dinner and go to bed at 6:00pm at Saddle Hut. Trek time approx. 3 to 5 hours to Saddle Hut plus 2-hour return slow acclimatisation to Little Meru hours. Meals: B, L, D Accom: 4 bedded dorms for students. Teacher of the same gender will share a dorm.

Meals:  B,L,D

The team will wake at midnight, get dressed and have a light breakfast before setting off with their head torches on. The trail quiclky steepens as the team head for their first target of Rhino Point (3,800) they will rest, drink and snack before slowly moving up again. (Rhino point is a good turn around point or those who are struggling). The terrain is a mix of volcanic ash and rocky outcrops as the team slowly ascends with their local guides assisiting. As the sun begins to rise over Mount Kilimanjaro the team should be near or at the summit of Mt Meru (4566m). After some time taking in the incredible views, the team will return along the same route with fantastic views of the Rift Valley, the volcanoes of Kirumbeni & Lengai and the town of Arusha. The team will rest and eat at the Saddle Hut before descending to stay overnight at Miriakamba Hut. (2514m). Trek time approx 12 to 16 hours. Meals: B, L, D Accom: 4 bedded dorms for students. Teacher of the same gender will share a dorm.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today is the last day of the trek and after a last breakfast, the team will return down the trail to Momella Gate arriving in time for lunch. The team will have the chance to thank all of their guides, cooks and porters before being transported back to Arusha for the evening to relax. Trek time approx. 3 to 4 hours. Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single room.

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, the team will be picked up and transferred, (approx. 90 minutes), onto Tarangire National Park. Ranking as the 6th largest National Park in Tanzania and covering an area of 2,600 square kilometers, The Tarangire National Park has one of the largest elephant populations in Africa with several herds of up to 300 members per herd. In addition, there are large numbers of impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle, the greater and lesser kudu and on rare occasions, the unusual gerenuk and fringe –eared Oryx are also seen. A few black rhinos are also thought to be still present in this park. Among the wildebeest and zebra other common animals in the Tarangire are the leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetah that seem to be popular within the southern open areas. In the afternoon the team will transfer, (approx. 90 minutes), to their accommodation outside Ngorongoro Crater/Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single room.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today's safari will take the team down into the Ngorongoro Crater for exploration. Ngorongoro Conservation Area is world famous for the massive crater teeming with wildlife. The collapsed volcanic caldera is 610 meters deep and 260 square kilometers wide. Herds of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle graze crater floor, along with elephants, hippos, buffalo, flamingos, and rare black rhinos. High density of predators includes many lion prides, cheetahs, and hyenas. The team will most likely see Elephants, Zebras, Wilderbeest, Hyenas, and maybe lucky enough to see Cheetah, Lions, Leopards and Rhinos. Meals: B, L, D Accom: students = twin, triples, quads. Teachers = single room

Today is a free day with no pre-booked activities so the team can choose, (and pay), for the experience they wish to do with their Guide assisting them. The team can choose to book a 2 hour snorkel session, a 2 hour village tour, have a spice tour, visit Stone Town or simply have a team day on the beach. Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
