Malaysia ranks as one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world, with at least 20% of the world’s known plant and animal species. Malaysia, along with southeast Asian nations, are among the major producers of timber and wood products, but are also one of the top countries with the biggest forest shrinkage. Malaysian territory is approximately two thirds forest. However, over the past 20 years, 7.7 million hectares of tree cover has been lost, equivalent to a 26% decrease. Malaysia’s forests have been devastated by major threats such as plantation expansion and illegal logging activities, with over 60% of forests cleared in the Malaysian peninsula.

Protecting the environment is vital to the growth and success of humans and animals alike, spurring World Expeditions Schools commitment to conservation projects to assist within this region. Students participating in this program will engage in various projects that introduce students to sustainability, conservation, and enable positive growth towards the preservation of Malaysian forests.

Day 1
Arrival Kuala Lumpur, trip and safety briefing, cultural activities

We arrive at Kuala Lumpur (KL) International Airport where our team will be waiting. Minivans pick us up at the airport and drop us off at our hotel in downtown KL. After a brief check-in, we have an in-country orientation and safety brief composed of information about plans for the upcoming week! We then head out to explore the cultural highlights of this vibrant city including Batu caves, a series of caves and temples, which is a one of the most important religious sites for Hindus in the world, Merdeka Square, KL City Gallery and the River of Life. We head out for a welcome rooftop dinner where we have the opportunity to try various cultural dishes and explore the bustling streets of KL. We return to the hotel and get some rest for the exciting week ahead. Overnight hotel in KL

Day 2
Lumut & Project orientation

The day starts bright and early with breakfast before being picked up by our transport for our journey to Lumut, stopping along the way for snacks! We will have a chance to enjoy the ocean once we arrive as we will take a ferry over to Pankor Island where we will set up camp for the next few days. Once we are settled, we will have a briefing for the project work for the next few days and get a chance to visit our project sites in order to gain an understanding of our work and the impact it will give towards the community and the environment. In the evening we will head back to our dorm room on Pangkor Island and enjoy a delicious dinner and play some fun and challenging team building games to get to know each other better! Day 3
Turtle & Beach Conservation, snorkle and kayaking Turtle Island

We start the day fresh and early next to the ocean with breakfast and head straight to the Turtle & Beach Conservation & Rehabilitation Centre. Once there, we will get the honor to be involved with the turtle patrol for rehabilitation of turtle landing site along the Segari and Pangkor Beaches. We will also get a chance to visit Turtle Ilad and kayak and snorkle in this stunning location. We explore the Segari turtle sanctuary, during our turtle patrol duty. We will also be focusing on a beach cleanup, tree planting and propagation to aid the landing site. After a long day outside, we head back to our accommodation where we freshen up for dinner with a bon fire on the beach. Then it’s time to get a good night's sleep to prepare for another full day! Day 4
Adventure Day - Drive to Gopeng, Caving and Rafting

Today is a fun full day of adventure! We drive inland a short distance to Gopeng and split into our groups for our adventure day. The group will go on a caving expedition with helmets and head torches to explore the wild caves along with enjoying white water rafting along the river. Students will be pushing their comfort zones as they explore these large limestone formations and discover the multi-level and multi chambered caves and raft along the river surrounded by the beauty and serenity the Malaysian jungle has to offer! After we are done adventuring for the afternoon, we head back to our rooms in Gopeng for much needed dinner! Overnight dorm hotel Gopeng

Day 5
Join local Jakun Tribe for cultural immersion, return to Kuala Lumpur

Today we join the local Jakun indigenous tribe for a day of cultural activities including exploring the local jungle in search of the Rajah Brooke Butterfly, the National Butterfly of Malaysia, a traditional hunting blowpipe activity and cooking class for lunch with a local family. We then pack up from our hotel and make our way back to Kuala Lumpur. We arrive into the city mid afternoon, check back into our hotel, and celebrate a great week with a final rooftop dinner overlooking the lights and skyline of KL! Tonight we can reflect on all we have accomplished over the past week. Overnight hotel in KL

Day 6
Departure Day

We pack up and get ready to head home today. We will spend the day exploring the city of Kuala Lumpur, visiting sites such as Merdeka Square and the Central Market for some souvenir shopping! Transportation will then be waiting and ready to bring us to the airport. We say our last goodbyes and make sure to capture one last group photo before checking in for our departing flight.
