Today is the day we've been waiting for! We excitedly arrive into Perth (or Busselton) and meet our guides for a trip briefing. Before long, we've got our bags packed in the vehicle and we're travelling down to Yallingup on the South West Coast. We settle into camp and then head out to visit Cape Naturaliste for our first peek at the sweeping ocean views we're surrounded by. Our appetite for epic landscapes is truly whet! We spend the evening getting organised—final gear checks, route briefings, and discussing team roles for the days ahead. After a filling dinner we head to bed early and prepare for the real adventure to start tomorrow. Accommodation: Camping or cabins

Meals:  Nil

We wake well energised and fuel up with a nutritious breakfast. Today we hike! We transfer to our starting point - the amazing Wilyabrup Cliffs - and do our final gear checks and pack fit. Before long we're doing our first steps on the Cape to Cape! We walk a mix of coastal trails and clifftop sections, while tackling elevation changes. There’s plenty to take in and we regularly stop to take in wide-open views that make every climb worthwhile. It's our first day and we ensure there are plenty of breaks as our bodies accustom to carrying a loaded pack and being on our feet for long stretches. In the early afternoon we reach Ellensbrook. There's a collective sense of achievement on completing our first full day on track. Once we set up camp we enjoy free time to explore the area and cool off at the beach. Walking distance: 14 km Accommodation: Camping

Meals:  Nil

Today starts with a short side trip to Meekadarribee Falls, a great chance to explore a unique inland feature before continuing our 12.5km hike toward Prevelly. The track offers a mix of coastal heath, river crossings, and undulating terrain that keeps things interesting and challenging. We spend time today learning navigation and group decision-making - both core skills for outdoor expeditions. It's a shorter day today so we have the option to move faster and enjoy more time to relax at camp, or to move slowly and enjoy taking breaks and lingering on the cliffs to try to spot whales! By the time we reach Prevelly, there’s a strong sense of progress and capability within the group. We're rewarded with toilets and hot showers at camp and sharing dinner together warm, dry, and clean! Prevelly is a great location to get an iconic Western Australia sunset so we round out the evening doing just that. Walking distance: 12.5 km Accommodation: Camping or cabins

Meals:  Nil

Walk out of accommodation today and straight up and over the limestone ridge at We wake and prepare ourselves physically and mentally for our 'challenge' day. After a big breakfast we head out to tackle 17.5km of varied terrain including some sand walking, undulations onto and down from the escarpment, and scrub walking. But by now, we’re functioning as a strong, capable team—supporting each other through tougher sections and managing energy across the full day. And we make sure the snacks are flowing and the fun is present! The coastal scenery remains a constant highlight, but today is about pushing limits and proving what we’re capable of. Reaching Conto after a full day on track brings a huge sense of achievement and sets us up well for the final stage tomorrow. Walking distance: 17.5 km Accommodation: Camping

Meals:  Nil

It's our last day on trail and we're feeling a little tired but significantly more confident and comfortable on trail. We take on our final 15km stretch from Conto to Boranup, moving through a mix of coastal and forested landscapes that show a different side of the region. With strong navigation and teamwork now second nature, we move confidently and efficiently along the track. Finishing the hike at Boranup, we celebrate completing the journey before transferring into Margaret River town. The shift from expedition life to a relaxed setting is well earned, and we wrap up with a team celebration dinner—recognising the effort, growth, and shared experience that’s brought us to this point. Walking distance: 15 km Accommodation: Camping or cabins

Meals:  Nil

We pack up and begin our return journey to Perth or Busselton Airport for departure. This final day is all about reflecting on what we’ve achieved—completing a challenging multi-day trek, building independence, and strengthening teamwork under real conditions. We take time to share highlights, challenges, and personal wins from across the journey. We leave not just with great memories, but with increased confidence, resilience, and a genuine sense of accomplishment from completing a demanding Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey together.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.

Grading

Moderate

The Cape to Cape walk is a rewarding coastal hike with plenty of variety. While daily distances aren’t excessive, the terrain changes often, with gentle ups and downs, some sandy sections and some beach walking along the way. Expect to be on the trail for 6-8 hours with a mix of walking, learning about navigation and other outdoor skills, and having plenty of breaks! A reasonable level of fitness, the ability to be on your feet for several hours at a time, and good general health will give you the best chance of enjoying the experience comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

The track runs mostly along the coast. It makes use of old 4WD vehicle tracks, constructed paths and natural beach sections which are mostly sand. Approximately 15-20% of the walk is on the beach with the rest of a mix of cliff tops, coastal heath and forest.

We recommended that you have a reasonable level of fitness for this trip. Walking distances range from 14km to 26km per day, and you will walk carrying a day pack (weighing around 5-7kg). Thorough physical and mental preparation is important for your safe participation and enjoyment of this expedition. As with any active holiday, the fitter you are for the activity, the more you will enjoy it. In short, fitness enables you to do more, see more and simply relax more.

We leave Perth at 8am on day 1. With an early departure, we recommend a night in Perth before the tour for those coming from interstate or overseas.

We run the trip in Autumn (between March to May) and in Spring (in September and October). During these months we have the best chance of nice, sunny days without it being too hot as there is no shade along the track. In Spring you will see lots of wildflowers. April and May tend to have the best weather but there are no wildflowers at that time. The water is still warm though so you can still go for a swim at that time. Rain can occur at any time of year. The average temperatures in the months that the walk runs are as follows:

Mar: 13 min - 26 max

Apr: 11 min - 21 max

May: 10 min - 19 max

Sep: 8 min - 18 max

Oct: 9 min - 19 max
