Students make stops at Maria Island to explore its unique ecosystems, and at the stunning Freycinet Peninsular to hike the Wineglass Bay trail, and kayak along the Freycinet coastline. A cultural immersion with Aboriginal educators provides a meaningful way for students to connect their learning experiences and to connect personally to Country. The long-anticipated adventure has finally arrived! After meeting our guides at Launceston Airport, we come together for a trip briefing, outlining the experiences, expectations and highlights of the days to come. We waste no time heading straight to the dramatic Tasman Peninsula, where towering sea cliffs and wild ocean views set the tone for the journey ahead. Depending on the time we have, we explore what we can around the beautiful coast before transferring to Port Arthur. This premier UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic site was formerly a brutal 19th-century penal colony. In the evening we settle into our Port Arthur accommodation having gained a real sense of the landscape around us and real excitement for all the adventures ahead. Accommodation: Cabins at Port Arthur

Today we take on the spectacular Cape Hauy trail, one of Tasmania’s most rewarding coastal hikes. The track winds through bushland before opening up to dramatic clifftop views, with the ocean stretching endlessly on both sides. We keep an eye out for local wildlife such as wallabies, wombats, birdlife and the occasional echidna. Our guides share stories of the landscape, pointing out native plants and explaining how this environment has been shaped over time. Reaching the cape is a highlight, with towering dolerite columns rising from the sea below. We return to our accommodation to relax, reflect on the day’s highlights and enjoy being unplugged from technology while truly plugged into the natural world around us. Walking Distance: 9 km Accommodation: Cabins at Port Arthur

We shift our focus today to learn and give back through a hands-on conservation service program. Working alongside local partners, we take part in habitat restoration and learn about the impacts of marine pollution on fragile ecosystems. The experience is both practical and meaningful, helping us understand the real challenges facing the environment. The specific project we work on will be determined based on the current focus of the conservation group we're working with. Whether activities related to marine pollution, forest science or renewable resources we know it will an eye-opening experience that leaves us feeling a greater sense of environmental responsibility that will stay with us well beyond this trip. Today is a special day! We drive North to Triabunna and take a 30 minute ferry trip across Mercury Passage to Maria Island. What greets us as we disembark is one of Tasmania’s least visited, yet most wonderful, locations. We are completely captivated from the moment we step ashore Maria Island. That captivation increases as we learn about the rich history of this place - from Aboriginal habitation, to convict penal station, to farming, and to the National Park it is today. We spend the day exploring the Painted Cliffs and Fossil Cliffs and picnicking with the local wildlife (wombats, pademelons and Cape Barren geese!). There are no vehicles apart from the rangers vehicles and very few natural predators so the animals roam free and are not scared of visitors! We return by ferry to the mainland in the afternoon for dinner and some much welcome rest after a big day. Accommodation: Cabins at Orford

Meals:  B,L,D

After a delicious breakfast, we head north to the stunning Freycinet Peninsula – one of Tasmania’s most iconic coastal regions. There is time to find a nice lunch spot and to have a quick explore of our area. Then we head out to the water for an amazing afternoon kayaking experience! Kayaking this part of Freycinet is regarded by many as one of the most scenic paddles in the world. We glide across Great Oyster Bay beneath the imposing Hazards Range, keeping watch for White-bellied Sea Eagles and the occasional curious seal. Our guides share stories of the National Park’s history and environment as we paddle along the coastline. After time on the water, we settle into our accommodation at Coles Bay, relaxing and enjoying an al fresco dinner by the sea. Accommodation: Cabins at Coles Bay

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we explore Freycinet National Park on the classic Hazards Loop, one of Tasmania’s most iconic day walks. The track climbs through coastal bush to spectacular lookouts over Great Oyster Bay and the pink granite peaks of the Hazards. We descend to the famous sweep of Wineglass Bay, where we stop for a well-earned swim in the clear waters. Along the way, we may spot wallabies, echidnas and seabirds, with White-bellied Sea Eagles often soaring overhead. We draw on insights shared by our Palawa cultural educator, reflecting on Aboriginal connections to land and sea. We return to camp to rest our feet and enjoy a hearty dinner after a rewarding day. Walking distance: 11-13 km Accommodation: Cabins at Coles Bay

Meals:  B,L,D

We've had a physical last few days so today we rest the body and tune our minds to learn all about the local Tasmania aboriginal cultures. We are joined by a member of the local NITA Education team, a Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural group of educators inspiring students to discover more about Aboriginal culture and about environmental sustainability. Our Palawa local guide shares with us how Aboriginal people have lived in Tasmania for over 42,500 years! We take time to lean in and learn how their ancestors cared for the land, and in return how it cared for them. As the afternoon approaches, we jump in our vehicles to transfer north to Launceston for the next leg of our trip. Accommodation: Cabins at Launceston

Meals:  B,L,D

We leave Launceston and head inland towards Tasmania’s wild north-west, travelling to the dramatic landscapes of Cradle Mountain. Our first stop is the Mole Creek Caves, an ancient limestone cave system shaped over millions of years by underground rivers. We explore cathedral-like chambers filled with delicate stalactites and stalagmites, crystal formations and mirror-still reflection pools, all preserved in a constant 9-degree underground climate. After lunch, we continue into Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Dramatic mountain peaks, alpine plains and valleys carved by ancient glaciers signal our arrival in one of Australia’s most iconic mountain environments. We spend the afternoon settling into our wonderfully rustic cabins and resting before our hiking day tomorrow. Accommodation: Cabins at Waldheim

Meals:  B,L,D

We begin the day with a delicious and energising breakfast, gearing up for our final hike in Cradle Mountain National Park. Together, we decide on the day’s walking route, using our leadership skills to assess the group’s energy, ability and the kind of challenge we’re keen for. We choose between a shorter circuit around Dove Lake or a longer hike to Cradle Mountain’s summit, knowing either will deliver incredible scenery and many fun trail moments! The day is a great culmination - bringing together the personal and team skills we’ve built throughout our trip. We return from our hike a little tired but totally buzzing from an incredible day. We enjoy a final team dinner together, sharing stories, laughter and reflections of a truly unforgettable journey. Accommodation: Cabins at Waldheim

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we rise and enjoy our last morning together in Tasmania. We take our time having breakfast, debriefing the trip, and making the most of the fresh air and peaceful surroundings we're in. We then transfer back to Launceston enjoying our last glances of the landscape as we go before arriving at the airport for our flight home.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
