We wake up to our first full day of the trip. And it's an exciting one! After breakfast we head out to the white sandy beach nearby to spot the resident bottle nose dolphins that come up to the shore line every day. This is a great opportunity to learn more about these intelligent creatures as well as interact with them. We visit the World Heritage Discovery Centre and learn more about this important ecological area, before we join a marine biologist at the award winning Ocean Park - a unique research and rehabilitation facility for marine life. We'll all be wide-eyed as we get up close with some amazing sea creatures. We finish off our conservation program with a beach clean up learning about the damage micro plastics and other rubbish is doing to this pristine environment. Accommodation: Dorm rooms

Today marks the start of our aboriginal cultural immersion on Malgana Country in François Peron National Park. With exclusive access to the Big Lagoon eco site, we set up camp among red sand dunes, arid shrublands and striking turquoise waters. Guided by local Malgana hosts, we begin exploring the Wulyibidi coastline on foot and by kayak, learning how this landscape has been shaped and cared for over thousands of years. Along the way, we explore mangrove systems, look for marine and birdlife, and start learning about bush tucker, medicinal plants and reading the land. As evening falls, we gather around the fire to share stories and reflect on our first day on Country. Accommodation: Camping at exclusive Big Lagoon eco site

Meals:  B,L,D

We wake on Country and spend the day deepening our understanding of Malgana culture, knowledge and environmental stewardship. Continuing our exploration along the coastline and waterways, students trek and kayak through this World Heritage landscape, building confidence and teamwork while learning about animal tracking, food sources and sustainable land management. There are opportunities to spot turtles, dugongs, fish and birdlife, and to ask questions directly of our hosts. Our final evening is again spent together around the fire, reflecting on the challenges, the learning and the powerful connections formed with culture, place and one another in this rare and privileged setting. Accommodation: Camping at exclusive Big Lagoon eco site

We wake early and hit the road for our day's drive to Coral Bay, home to the World Heritage Listed Ningaloo Reef and Marine Park. On our way, we will stop off at the extraordinary Stromatalites at Hamelin Pool. These are no ordinary "rocks", these guys are the reason for Shark Bay's World Heritage listing. You will literally be seeing the oldest eco-system on Earth. We spend time exploring and learning about the curious formations before continuing to Coral Bay in the afternoon. This is a full day drive and we will need to prepare accordingly with plenty of snacks, water, and car games! We will make regular stops and make the day as comfortable and fun as possible. The evening will be very relaxed and a welcome chance to wander the town, relax, and enjoy our new surroundings and landscape. Accommodation: Camping at Coral Bay

Meals:  B,L,D

Today is one of those days that will stay with us forever. We eagerly eat breakfast and then make our way to our boat which will take us out to find manta rays to swim with! On the way, our guides introduce us to the unique ecosystem surrounding Coral Bay and explain why manta rays visit these waters each year. Excitement builds as we gear up for our swim and then slip into the clear blue to witness these gentle giants moving gracefully through the ocean—an unforgettable moment of awe and connection. Between swims, we relax on deck, watching for turtles and colourful reef life while learning about the conservation efforts protecting this remarkable environment. By late afternoon we return to shore, sun tired and inspired. Back at camp, we gather for an evening debrief to share highlights and reflect on what we learned before settling in for a well earned rest. Accommodation: Camping at Coral Bay

Meals:  B,L,D

We wake up still buzzing from yesterday’s adventure and farewell Coral Bay as we travel north to Exmouth. As the largest town in the region, Exmouth is our stop to get fitted out with specialist gear for the kayaking expedition ahead and to have a quick break and an ice cream if we're lucky! Then it's on to Yardie Creek Gorge to tackle the spectacular rim walk. This walk takes our breath away with its sweeping views of the gorge, towering red limestone cliffs and winding tidal waters below. By late afternoon we settle in to camp, and get ready for the kayaking journey on the water starting tomorrow. The sense of anticipation is high as we shift into expedition mode. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping

Meals:  B,L,D

It's a beautiful beach breakfast for us and an opportunity to fuel up before we begin an epic overnight expedition on the water. Following a safety briefing, gear check and paddling instruction on the beach, we check charts, talk through the plan ahead and enjoy a quick practice snorkel. We then launch into the turquoise lagoon of Ningaloo Reef, paddling through calm, clear waters between the beach and fringing reef. From our kayaks, we spot juvenile green turtles, cowtail stingrays and schools of fish before pulling in at a beautiful sandy point for lunch and snorkelling among thousands of fish and towering coral bommies. Reaching the day’s endpoint, we work together to secure our kayaks above the high-tide line, return to basecamp, learn to use expedition stoves and share a well-earned dinner. Accommodation: Wilderness Camping

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast we pack up our camp and return to our kayaks to continue paddling in the Ningaloo lagoon. We're much more confident in the rhythm of travelling as a group and paddling in sync with our partner. We glide through the water, hearing stories from our guides about the history, culture, and current events of the area we are in. There are opportunities to stop for a swim and snorkel along the way and we make the most of these! After lunch we paddle our last few kilometers of our expedition before helping pack away our kayaking equipment and farewelling our kayak guides. Before long we're on the road to Exmouth for our final night together. If we still have some energy, we head to the Vlamingh Lighthouse for a last beautiful sunset experience on the Coral Coast. Accommodation: Camping in Exmouth

Meals:  B,L,D

We ease into our last morning with the chance for a final swim or a quiet moment taking in the coastline before breakfast. It’s a relaxed wrap-up to the trip—time to organise gear, reflect on the past days, and enjoy being together in this place one more time. After a brief debrief, we head to Exmouth airport for our flight home.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.

Frequently Asked Questions

The terrain is rocky and uneven, and there is a lot of ascending and descending – both for the peaks and the gorge walks.

This trip is for almost anyone with a moderate level of fitness and competent swimming ability. The walks are not long, but you will be walking on rocky and uneven terrain, so balance, agility and strength are very important on this trip. You will need to be comfortable walking on rocky paths, and at times, scrambling or shuffling through narrow gorges. If you have any questions about your suitability please give us a call and speak with one of our staff members. We are more than happy to discuss additional information about what you can expect.

The trip runs in May, June and July which we think is the best time to visit the Karijini and Ningaloo. At this time of year the weather is generally cooler and dryer. Night time temperatures can be cold, but day time temperatures are pleasant for walking.

Days are usually dry in the low 30’s. However, some evenings can be very chilly, particularly in June in the Karijini, with overnight temperatures dipping to minimums of 10 - 15 deg. It can rain at any time, so please be prepared.

On day 1 we will pick you up at the airport in Paraburdoo. The flight that we recommend booking is the one that leaves Perth at 1:30pm and will get you to Paraburdoo by 3:30pm. (On the 15th May 2020 there isn’t a 1:30pm flight so we recommend the 2:40pm flight).

There is patchy phone coverage in Karijini National Park however in some of the higher spots like Mount Bruce you may get a text away! In Tom Price and Exmouth you should be able to get reception from most service providers, however Telstra is the most reliable. Generally, Telstra is your best bet for providers outside of major cities anywhere in Australia.

We have the ability to charge cameras/phones/ipads/kindles in the vehicle. However, we can only charge two or three at a time. Bring your own USB charging cables. Please ensure your cameras are fully charged at the start of the tour.

Drinking water is always available. Guests may bring a small quantity of alcohol. If possible please purchase beer and wine ineither cask or cans as opposed to glass. There will be an opportunity to purchase alcohol in Tom Price and Exmouth. There is limited capacity for cooling drinks.

There are washing machines at Tom Price caravan park and Exmouth Caravan Park. At the Eco Retreat Caravan Park, there is water available for bucket washing of clothes.
