This multi-day school expedition takes students into Australia’s Top End, beginning with an Indigenous cultural immersion on Wulna Country near Darwin and continuing through the World Heritage landscapes of Kakadu National Park. Guided by Traditional Owners and experienced leaders, students learn about connection to Country through storytelling, bush skills, art and everyday cultural practices grounded in lived experience. The journey includes a meaningful community service program, ranger-led insights into conservation and land management, and immersive exploration of Kakadu’s wetlands, rock art sites, waterfalls and sandstone escarpments. Picturesque hikes, remote camping and shared responsibilities build resilience, teamwork and independence. Throughout the program, students develop a deeper respect for Australia’s First Nations cultures while engaging with one of the country’s most significant natural environments.

After all the planning and preparation the time has come to start your journey. We fly to Darwin and will be picked up at the airport and head straight to Pudakul on Wulna Country. The drive will take just over 1 hour. We meet with Aboriginal elders for a traditional Welcome to Country (Cul Cul) and settle in and set up camp. We will then join the local indigenous team for a full trip and safety briefing. Depending on our arrival time we will start our cultural immersion program this afternoon. Our hands on program will include engaging with a local Aboriginal family on Aboriginal land, connection to Country and how the local peoples consider themselves custodians of the land and have lived in harmony with their environment for thousands of years. Tonight we will have a BBQ with our hosts and learn about storytelling and sacred dreamtime stories around the campfire. Accommodation: Camping at Pudakul

Meals:  D

We spend the day fully immersed on Wulna Country, learning through hands-on experience. Moving across Pudakul land, we forage for bush materials used to create clapsticks and spears, collect ochre for natural dyes and strip fibres to make rope. Back at camp, we use these materials in practical activities including art, hunting techniques and identifying local flora and fauna. We learn the meaning behind Pudakul and try spear throwing ourselves. Throughout the day, knowledge is shared through doing, building a deeper understanding of how culture, land and daily life are connected. Accommodation: Camping at Pudakul

Today we step into a community service program, working alongside locals on projects that respond to real community needs. Activities may include creating bush tucker gardens, supporting local school programs, conservation work such as track maintenance or tree planting, or assisting with harvesting and preparing bush foods. Each project is shaped in consultation with the community, giving us a genuine opportunity to contribute while learning about sustainability, land care and local priorities. It’s a practical, purposeful day that highlights the importance of collaboration, respect and giving back. Accommodation: Camping at Pudakul

This morning we farewell our hosts after breakfast and begin our journey into Kakadu National Park. Travelling via Ubirr, we explore one of Australia’s most significant Aboriginal rock art sites, where ancient galleries reveal stories of Country and culture through striking, well-preserved artworks. We continue to Cahills Crossing on the East Alligator River, a dynamic and culturally important crossing known for its abundant wildlife and views into Arnhem Land. By late afternoon, we arrive at our semi-permanent camp near Djarradjin Billabong, where students work together to set up camp and settle into life in the World Heritage-listed National Park. Accommodation: Camping at Djarradjin Billabong

Meals:  B,L,D

We wake to the dawn chorus echoing across Kakadu’s wetlands before assisting with breakfast and preparing for a full day of exploration. This morning, we visit Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), where a guided walk takes us past remarkable rock art sites that provide deep insight into Aboriginal culture and connection to Country. After lunch, we continue to Angbangbang Billabong, a tranquil and scenic location rich in birdlife and framed by the Arnhem Land escarpment. In the afternoon, we cruise Yellow Water Billabong with an expert local guide, spotting crocodiles, wallabies, and abundant birdlife including magpie geese, brolgas and jabirus, before returning to camp as the light softens over the floodplains. Accommodation: Camping at Jim Jim Falls

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast and pack-down, we prepare lunch before travelling deeper into Kakadu’s rugged stone country. This morning, we walk through monsoon forest to reach Maguk (Barramundi) Falls, where a scenic track opens onto a pristine plunge pool framed by pale quartzite cliffs—an inviting Top End oasis. Along the way, we look for colourful birdlife and unique plant species that thrive in this sheltered environment. In the afternoon, we return to camp at Jim Jim to rest and cool off before another night in the outback. Accommodation: Camping at Jim Jim Falls Camp

Meals:  B,L,D

We begin the day with breakfast before embarking on the iconic trek to Jim Jim Falls, one of Kakadu’s most spectacular natural features. The 6km walk leads us through monsoon forest and across rocky terrain to a towering sandstone gorge, where sheer cliffs frame a deep, cool rockpool at the base of the falls. There are some challenging parts to the hike with a few scrambles and steep sections. We have plenty of time and take rest breaks as needed. The reward of a swim when we reach the rock pool feels well deserved! It's a great chance to take in the scale and beauty of this remote location. Returning to camp in the afternoon, we reflect on a rewarding day exploring one of the park’s most dramatic and memorable sites. Accommodation: Camping at Jim Jim Falls Camp

Meals:  B,L,D

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Twin Falls region, travelling by 4WD and on foot through Kakadu’s remote wilderness. Boardwalks and sandy tracks guide us through monsoon forest to Twin Falls, where cascading waters spill into a series of sheltered rockpools beneath towering cliffs. This is a unique and tranquil setting, offering opportunities to relax, swim and learn more about the area’s ecology and cultural significance. We return to camp later in the day, enjoying our final evening together immersed in Kakadu’s remarkable landscapes. Accommodation: Camping at Jim Jim Falls Camp

Meals:  B,L,D

On our final morning, we pack down camp and begin the journey back towards Darwin. Along the way, we stop at Cooinda for a refreshing swim in the hotel pool and time to unwind before continuing north. Taking in our last views of Kakadu’s floodplains and escarpments, we arrive in Darwin for our return flight home. After days of cultural immersion, exploration and shared challenges, we leave with a deeper connection to Country and lasting memories of this extraordinary national park.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
