We land in Darwin and step straight into the heat, colour and laid-back energy of the Top End. After settling in, we head out to explore the waterfront and get our first feel for this tropical gateway to northern Australia. This is where the journey begins—meeting the group, getting organised and starting to understand the unique environment we’re about to explore. There’s a buzz in the air as we shift out of everyday routine and into expedition mode, building momentum for the adventure ahead. Accommodation: Darwin hotel

We wake for our first full day of the trip - and we're excited! The morning sees us board a ferry and leave Darwin behind - travelling the 2.5hr crossing to the Tiwi Islands. The sense of stepping into a different world builds as we arrive on Bathurst Island and are welcomed onto Country by our Tiwi hosts. This immersion is not about observing—we’re participating! And today begins three days of hearing stories, participating in art projects, and visiting local significant landmarks. As the day rolls on we begin to understand the depth of Tiwi culture and connection to land. Today sets the tone for a powerful cultural experience that we carry with us throughout the whole trip. We finish the day sharing dinner around the campfire together amongst stories, games, and music. Accommodation: Camping on Country

Meals:  B,L,D

We wake on Country and begin the day with breakfast outdoors, surrounded by the sounds, stories and landscapes of the Tiwi Islands. Today we go deeper. Spending a full day with our hosts, we head out on a guided walk from a local billabong through to the beach, learning directly from the Traditional Owners about their culture, history and deep connection to this land. There is time for a refreshing swim for those who are keen, or space to sit, listen and yarn with our hosts. As evening arrives, we gather around the fire to share stories, ask questions and reflect together. It’s a powerful day that challenges perspectives, builds awareness and creates genuine connection — with each other, with Country and with ourselves. Accommodation: Camping on Country

Meals:  B,L,D

We wrap up our time on the Tiwi Islands with more shared experiences and time on Country. There’s a sense that we’re starting to really understand what we’ve been learning over the past few days. We gratefully farewell our hosts and then board the ferry back to Darwin, giving us time to relax and reflect as a group. Back in Darwin, we have time to explore the harbour and reset before the next stage of the trip. It's a transition point as we shift from cultural immersion into a more active, outdoor-focused part of the journey. Accommodation: Darwin hotel

Meals:  B,L,D

We leave Darwin behind and head into Litchfield National Park, where the landscape changes fast — fewer roads, more waterfalls, rainforest and open bushland. After gearing up, we hit the track around Wangi Falls, hiking through shaded monsoon forest, over rocky paths and past towering pandanus and paperbarks. The hike and the heat brings some challenge but we move slowly, learn how to manage the conditions, and support each other along the way. There’s time to cool off with a swim beneath the falls before heading to camp to get settled and relax. This is where the journey begins to feel like an expedition, with everyone stepping up and getting involved. Accommodation: Litchfield National Park Camping

Meals:  B,L,D

Today is a full day of exploring and hiking to discover more of the beautiful Litchfield National Park. This area is known for its range of landscapes - from impressive waterfalls to open woodland and sandstone escarpments. It even has remarkable towering magnetic termite mounds which we'll keep an eye out for. It’s an active day with plenty of time on our feet, but with so much to see and admire. We spend time relating our Tiwi Islands experience to our current setting and applying our new knowledge to this context. By the afternoon we are back at camp relaxing and getting set for another warm night eating dinner in our remote haven and and sleeping under the stars. Accommodation: Litchfield National Park Camping

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we switch gears and focus on conservation. We take part in a hands-on experience linked to Territory Wildlife Park, learning how ecosystems are managed and protected. It’s practical and interactive—we’re not just observing, we’re here to get our hands dirty! This gives us a different perspective on everything we’ve seen so far, connecting our experience in nature to real-world environmental challenges. It feels purposeful and adds another layer to the trip, showing how we can play a role in protecting places like this. It is a wholesome way to finish a remarkable week in the Top End. Accommodation: Litchfield National Park Camping

Meals:  B,L,D

It's our last day! After our final meal together we pack up camp for the last time and head back to Darwin Airport. The drive back feels different—we’ve experienced a lot, and the group is much tighter than when we started. We reflect on the cultural immersion, the hiking, the challenges and the moments that pushed us. There’s a strong sense of accomplishment and a better understanding of the Top End as a place. By the time we leave, we’ve built new skills, new perspectives and shared experiences that stick well beyond the trip.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
