This 9-day course will immerse students in the mountains and oceanic environments of southern Baja California Sur, Mexico. Students will engage in exploration of the island Espiritu Santo, explore the Sierra la Laguna Mountain range and subsequently work to understand the life cycle of the majestical, Whale Shark. Throughout this course, students will be expected to write, take photographs, draw and document their understanding of the natural and cultural environments of los Cabos, Baja. Additionally, students will research and present a class on a pertinent topic followed by a written reflection of their experiential learning.

Day 1
Arrive Mexico, La Paz , trip briefing and orientation

Day 2
Transfer to Isla Espritu Santo, explore Seal colony, snorkelling

Day 3
Explore San Dionisio Valley, learn about The Rancheros way of life and culture

Day 4
Commence trek in the Chapparral Ecosystem

Day 5
Continue trek up Canyon San Dionisio to Sierra la Laguna, learn about the Rancheros culture

Day 6
Ascend the highest mountain in Southern Baja

Day 7
Complete trek, travel to La Paz

Day 8
Swimming with the whale sharks, kayak around mangrove forest, celebration dinner

Transfer to la Paz Airport, depart

Learning outcomes for students

Grading

Introductory to Moderate

Introductory adventures are designed with the first time trekker in mind. They are challenging enough to make it a real adventure holiday, however the daily physical exercise is around six to eight hours and altitudes generally less than 4,200m. Introductory adventures are not necessarily easy. There will be some long steep ascents and some rough ground to cover. Remember trekking rarely involves flat terrain. Two to three months prior to departure you should spend thirty minutes to one hour exercising, three or four times per week eg. Hard walking, jogging or cycling. To prepare for a walking holiday we recommend you take every opportunity to walk up and down stairs and/or hills, for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. Please remember the fitter you are the more you will enjoy your holiday.
