This breathtaking Top End expedition invites students to take the lead on one of Australia’s most extraordinary hikes. Traversing the Arnhem Land escarpment from Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk) to Edith Falls (Leliyn), the Jatbula Trail winds past cascading waterfalls, ancient Jawoyn rock art sites and lush monsoon forests.

Carrying full packs and camping in remote bush sites, students take responsibility for navigation, camp set-up and food preparation, building independence, teamwork and resilience. With crystal-clear creeks throughout, there are daily opportunities to swim in warm, croc-free waters and reflect under star-filled skies.

This Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program is fully supported by experienced outdoor educators, aligns with key UN Sustainable Development Goals, and meets requirements for the Practice and/or Qualifying Adventurous Journey.

After months of planning, we finally arrive in Darwin ready to begin our expedition. We are met and transferred to our hotel, where the reality of the journey ahead starts to sink in. In the afternoon, we come together as a team for a full trip briefing with our guides. We learn how the trek will run, review maps and organise our food for the days ahead. This is where we begin working as a group, asking questions and preparing for life on the trail. The excitement builds as we get our first real taste of what’s to come. Accommodation: Darwin Hotel

It's trail day! And it begins nice and early with a filling breakfast and then the drive south to Katherine. The starting point of our walk is at Katherine Gorge. On arrival, we do a final check of our gears and make sure our packs are sitting nicely - then we hit the trail! After crossing the Katherine River we step onto the rugged stone country leave the road and civilisation behind. The Northern Rockhole offers a fantastic swimming spot which we enjoy before finishing today's walk to our evening campsite beside the clear, flowing stream of Biddlecombe Cascades. By the time we reach camp, we work together to set up tents, organise food and settle into our first night in the wild. This is where we begin to take ownership of the journey, building confidence and teamwork from day one. Walking distance: 8 km | Driving time: approx 4 hours Accommodation: Camping on trail

We push deeper into the Arnhem Land escarpment today, surrounded by vast stone country that feels remote and untouched. This terrain is so vast it extends almost 1000km through the Top End! The trail becomes more rugged, and we begin to find our rhythm as a team on the trail. Along the way, we explore rocky outcrops and discover Jawoyn Aboriginal rock art sites tucked beneath overhangs, adding a powerful cultural connection to the landscape. By the time we reach Crystal Falls, we are well and truly immersed in the wilderness. The sound of cascading water sets the scene for camp, and we settle in knowing we’ve earned this incredible location and the cool swim that awaits us. Walking distance: 10.5 km Accommodation: Camping on trail

We set out early and make our way toward the Amphitheatre, a natural formation surrounded by cliffs and shaded by pockets of monsoon rainforest. The change in environment is striking, and we take time to explore the area and appreciate the cultural significance of the rock shelters. From here, we trek along the escarpment edge, taking in wide views across the landscape. The reward at the end of the day is 17 Mile Falls, where clear rock pools invite us in for a swim. We set up camp nearby, enjoying one of the most memorable locations of the trek. Walking distance: 10 kms Accommodation: Camping on trail

Today challenges us with our longest day on the trail as we follow the Edith River through open stone country. The distance pushes us physically, but we settle into a steady pace and support each other along the way. We stop at permanent waterholes, where birdlife gathers and we take a well-earned break. As we continue, the landscape opens up before guiding us to Sandy Camp Pool. Reaching camp feels like a real achievement, and we work together to set up and prepare for the night. This is a day that builds resilience and a strong sense of accomplishment within the group. Walking distance: 16.5 km Accommodation: Camping on trail

Meals:  Nil

After yesterday’s challenge, we enjoy a more relaxed pace as we continue along the Edith River. The trail winds through paperbark forests, past cascades and waterholes, giving us time to really take in our surroundings. We arrive at Sweetwater Pool by early afternoon, with plenty of time to swim, explore and unwind. This final full day on the trail gives us space to reflect on how far we’ve come as a group. We enjoy a relaxed evening at camp, sharing stories and making the most of our last night in this incredible environment. Walking distance: 11 km Accommodation: Camping on trail

Meals:  Nil

On our final morning, we pack up camp and begin the last stretch of the Jatbula Trail. The walk to Leliyn (Edith Falls) is shorter, giving us time to enjoy some of the best swimming spots along the way. Reaching the end of the trail is a proud moment for the whole group. After lunch at Edith Falls, we board our transport and begin the journey back to Darwin. The shift from remote wilderness to town feels surreal. We enjoy a final dinner and celebrate what we’ve achieved together while reflecting on the challenges we’ve overcome as a team. If we have some energy we'll wander and explore the Darwin waterfront before turning in for a night in a proper bed! Walking distance: 4.5 km | Driving time: approx 4hrs Accommodation: Camping on trail

Meals:  Nil

It's our final morning and we're tired but proud of what we've enjoyed. We enjoy a relaxed breakfast together before preparing to depart for the airport to return home. There are many stories and laughs on the way as we recall the many moments shared together in what has been an incredible adventurous journey.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
