Starting Point:

Grading:Moderate to Challenging

Today we depart Sydney with Qatar Airways on either a mid-afternoon or evening flight to Doha.

Meals:  Nil

Early morning arrival into Doha where your connecting flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) will depart from this morning. You will arrive in Tanzania mid afternoon and transferred to your hotel in Arusha. You then have the afternoon to get settled into your new environment before a trek briefing is held for the group in preparation for the beginning of the King's School Kilimanjaro Expedition in the morning. Overnight: Moivaro Coffee Lodge

Meals:  D

After completing the necessary registration formalities at Londorossi National Park gate, we drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho road head. The last section of the road is rough and certainly marks the beginning of the adventure proper. Lunch will be taken before starting the days walk. It is an easy day of walking up a small path through beautiful and lush forest. We camp at Lemosho Big Tree Camp (2650m); [2-3 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

We soon leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone of giant heather. The trail climbs steadily with wide views to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. There is a tangible sense of wilderness, especially if afternoon mists come in! We camp in the centre of the plateau at “Shira One” (3550m). [6-7 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

An easy day to help acclimatisation, and to explore the volcanic rock formations of Shira Plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral before reaching the next camp at Shira Hut (3840m). This campsite has stunning views, close to the glaciated dome of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The views from here of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. [4-5 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4550m) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley (3900 m), sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. [5-7 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga (4000m), the last water point on the way to the summit. [4-5 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

We follow an easy path on compacted scree with wide views that gains altitude unrelentingly to reach the Barafu campsite (4600m) for lunch. There is a short acclimatisation walk to the plateau at the bottom of the South-East valley (4800m). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. [3-5 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1:00am so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5735m), in about five or six hours. We will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5895m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite Millenium (3800m). [11-15 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

A sustained descent on a well constructed path through lovely tropical forest alive with birdsong and boasting lush undergrowth with considerable botanical interest. Our route winds down to the National Park gate at Mweka (1650m). Here we sign out from the National Park before walking on for a further 15 minutes through coffee and banana farms to Mweka village where our vehicle awaits. The shower and the swimming pool are tantalisingly close! Overnight at Moivaro Coffee Lodge. [4-6 hours walking]

Meals:  B,L,D

We will have an early start this morning as there is a lot to see and do today. We begin with a drive through rural Tanzania to the Lake Manyara National Park, a national park that lies on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Here we have a great chance to spot our first elephants, giraffe and hippos of the trip. The park is also home to a large number of flamingos as well as Africa's iconic predators, lions, cheetahs and leopards. Keep your eyes peeled! After a few hours game driving in the park we continue toward the town of Karatu and our accommodation this evening at the Ngorongoro Forest Tented Lodge.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we have another early start in order to make our way into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for this mornings game drive. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is named after the famed Ngorongoro Crater, an volcano that became extinct some 2.5 million years ago leaving a crater 610 metres deep. This crater is not only of stiking natural beauty but also a sort of natural corral for many mammal species including one of the densest know lion populations. A picnic lunch will be taken on the rim of the crater before moving on to Olduvai Gorge, considered by some to be the cradle of humanity and the site of the discovery of some of the oldest evidence of an early incarnation of our species in the form our thousands of bones and primitive stone tools. Finally we will move on to the world famous Serengeti National Park, game driving our way to our camp in the Central Region of the national park. Overnight Kati Kati Camp.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we have a full day of game viewing in Serengeti National Park. This is perhaps one of the world most iconic national parks on the planet known just as much for its boundless expanse as it is for it is for its animal population that includes the "Big 5" (Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant and Buffalo), so called as these were considered the most difficult animals to hunt on foot in British colonial times. These days the only shooting to be done is with your camera though in many ways the exhilaration is the same.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we have a final early morning game drive followed by a transfer to Seronera Airstrip for direct flight to Zanzibar. Meet and greet on arrival and transfer with buses to Pongwe Beach on the Eastern side of Zanzibar. After an action packed trip so far, it is time to set your watches to island time. Overnight: Dongwe Ocean View

Meals:  B,D

After a relaxed breakfast the group will head into town for a tour of the historic trading settlement of Stone Town. UNESCO listed in the year 2000 'Outstanding Universal Value' this former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate has a storied history dating back well before the Portuguese became the first Europeans to seize this strategically important island in the 1500's. You will learn of the cities role in colonial history as well as its time as a slave trading settlement. Lunch will be taken at Swahili House before an afternoon spice tour, where you will be able to engage the senses in the spice trade that made this place so powerful.

Meals:  B,L,D

Mnemba Island is a popular snorkelling site, off the north-eastern tip of the island, with a wide variety of corals and associated species, as well as occasional sightings of larger species such as turtles and dolphins. Today we will take a day trip to the marine reserve that includes a barbecue lunch.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning we will have a final chance for some rest and relaxation before departing for the airport to begin our journey back to Australia via Doha with Qatar Airways.

Meals:  B

Today you will be in transit en-route back to Sydney.

Meals:  Nil

This morning you will arrive back in Sydney on board the Qatar Airways flight from Doha.

Meals:  Nil

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
World Expeditions Schools absorbs the cost of credits mitigating 100% of the unavoidable carbon emissions. This is our commitment to being part of the solution to climate crises.

Moderate to Challenging

As with all our Moderate to Challenging programs, we expect clients to be regular outdoors people, enjoying aerobic sport around three to four times a week over some period of time. Preferably this has been a long term interest but if not, you have set a program of fitness preparation with at least three months lead in time to your trip. The fitter you are for your trip, the more of a holiday it will be. Activities as close to the actual activity on your trip are the best training; in this instance hill walking, with and without a daypack. This builds leg strength, aerobic capacity and confidence in your ability to travel comfortably with a pack for extended periods. At the same time, you are also comfortable with the layers you like to wear and footwear. Whilst this ascent of Kilimanjaro is not a technical climb, it is nevertheless a short and steep trek at altitude, and for many people it will be the hardest physical walk of their life. In order to get the most out of the trip, people should join in Arusha with a maximum state of fitness. There is not time to ‘get fit on the trek’ as with some of our other longer trekker programs elsewhere.
