After all the planning and preparation the wait is finally over! On arrival into Kota Kinabalu you will be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. Here, the guide will run through a full trip and safety briefing along with a quick language lesson. You can practise this throughout the remainder of your journey, A little effort goes a long way with the local people! After this briefing we make our first outing to the bustling Handicraft Market, a vibrant introduction to Sabah’s local artisans and cultural traditions. Here we can browse stalls filled with handmade textiles, woven baskets, pearls and local souvenirs while getting a feel for the rhythm of the city. After our visit we can explore some of the highlights of the city before freshening up and heading out to a local restaurant for our first meal at a welcome dinner.

Today has been set aside as a self-exploration day in and around Kota Kinabalu, often referred to as 'KK'. Students have the opportunity to decide as a group how they would like to spend their day accompanied by their teachers and guide. They may choose to visit the Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park, a group of five islands lying just off the coast of Borneo that boast stunning white sand beaches, snorkelling opportunities and a chance to learn about the extensive coral reef ecology and marine conservation. They may instead choose to stay in KK and explore the cultural sights such as the beautiful City Mosque, known as 'Likas Floating Mosque' or the Gaya Street market, if they're in town on a Sunday.

This morning we travel to Mari Mari Cultural Village, a fascinating introduction to the indigenous tribes of Borneo. Nestled in the lush countryside, the village operates as a living museum dedicated to preserving the rich history, traditions, and daily life of Sabah’s ethnic communities. As we explore the village, we experience a variety of traditional activities and demonstrations, from bamboo cooking and blowpipe practice to learning about longhouse architecture and local medicinal plants. This immersive experience provides a unique insight into how the indigenous people of Borneo lived hundreds of years ago, and highlights the importance of preserving their culture for future generations. After our visit, we transfer to Kiulu, a scenic area surrounded by rolling hills, rivers, and rice paddies. Here we settle in at our accommodation and take time to relax, soak in the peaceful rural setting, and prepare for the adventures ahead.

Over the next three days we engage in a hands-on community development project, working alongside a local village to make a positive contribution. Our tasks may include building or improving community spaces, supporting local schools with touch-ups and repairs, or assisting with shared gathering areas. Through this work, we gain a deeper understanding of daily life in the village, the challenges the community faces, and the importance of collaboration and cultural respect. To complement our service, we take a break for an adventure day in the middle of the project, immersing ourselves in the surrounding jungle. This experience allows us to hike through rainforest trails, practice basic survival skills, and connect with the natural environment in a way that enhances both our personal growth and our appreciation for the community we are serving. Combining meaningful service with adventure provides a balanced and enriching experience that leaves a lasting impact both on the people we meet and on ourselves.

Meals:  B,L,D

We begin the day with a scenic drive from Kiulu to Kundasang, winding through rolling hills, lush valleys, and picturesque countryside. Along the way we stop at Pekan Nabalu shopping centre, a lively local hub where we can browse a variety of stalls selling handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs, and interact with local vendors to get a taste of everyday life in Sabah. Upon arrival in Kundasang, we visit the Kundasang War Memorial, a deeply moving site dedicated to the memory of Australian and British soldiers, as well as local civilians, who lost their lives during World War II. The memorial is set against a backdrop of breathtaking mountains and gardens, offering a space for reflection and learning about the resilience, courage, and history of the local community. As we walk through the site, we gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made and the impact of the war on the people of Borneo. After our visit, we continue to our lodge in Kundasang, surrounded by the peaceful scenery of mountains, rivers, and terraces of farmland. We check in, settle into our rooms, and take time to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

We rise early for the Sunrise Challenge Hike up Maragang Hill, an invigorating trek that begins before dawn. As we ascend in the quiet of the early morning, we experience the stillness of the surrounding landscape, listening to the sounds of nature waking and feeling the anticipation build with every step. Reaching the summit just as the sun begins to rise, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the valleys and mountains bathed in golden light, a truly unforgettable moment that highlights the beauty and serenity of Sabah. After descending from Maragang Hill, we return to the lodge to freshen up and enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting out on our journey to the Kinabatangan River. Along the way we take in the ever changing scenery of Sabah’s countryside, passing through lush farmland, forests, and small villages, gaining a sense of the region’s diversity and natural richness. The drive offers opportunities to spot wildlife along the roadside and to reflect on the day’s early adventure. Upon arrival at the Kinabatangan River, we settle into our river lodge, surrounded by the sounds and sights of the rainforest. The remainder of the day allows us to relax, absorb the tranquil environment, and prepare for the wildlife-focused adventures that await on the river.

Today we immerse ourselves in the local culture and conservation efforts of Borneo. We begin with a cultural experience with a Water Tribe community, learning about their traditional way of life, customs, and connection to the river that sustains them. Through storytelling, demonstrations, and hands on activities, we gain insight into the unique heritage of these riverine communities and the importance of preserving their cultural traditions. Following this, we participate in a jungle conservation program with a local NGO. Activities may include hornbill monitoring, learning about the ecological role of these iconic birds, and contributing to reforestation efforts through seedling collection and planting. This hands-on experience gives us the chance to understand the challenges facing Borneo’s rainforest and to make a tangible contribution to its protection. By the end of the day, we return to our dormitory-style accommodation in Sukau, before enjoying another delicious dinner at a local restaurant.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we continue our hands on conservation and cultural learning with a focus on forest restoration and traditional river life. We start the day by participating in a forest restoration activity, which may include seedling hunting, planting, and caring for young trees. Through this experience, we gain a deeper understanding of the rainforest ecosystem, the importance of biodiversity, and the tangible ways communities and visitors can contribute to preserving Borneo’s unique environment. In the afternoon, we engage with a River People community, exploring their traditions, daily life, and the sustainable practices that allow them to live in harmony with the river. As part of this cultural experience, we take part in a sustainable fish net-making program, learning traditional techniques and understanding how these practices support both livelihoods and environmental stewardship. This hands-on activity not only teaches practical skills but also highlights the delicate balance between community needs and the health of the rainforest ecosystem.

Meals:  B,L,D

We begin the day with a magical sunrise river safari along the Kinabatangan, gliding quietly through the calm waters as the rainforest awakens. This early morning excursion gives us the chance to spot wildlife in their natural habitat, from exotic birds to playful primates, while observing the river ecosystem that sustains so many species. After the safari, we drive to Sepilok, where we receive a project orientation that introduces us to our upcoming conservation and rainforest activities. We then explore the Borneo Lowland Rainforest at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), immersing ourselves in the diversity of plant and animal life. Highlights include the plant discovery garden, where we learn to identify native species, and canopy jungle trails, offering a unique perspective of the rainforest from above. As the day transitions to evening, we embark on a guided night walk through the rainforest, discovering the nocturnal life that thrives under the cover of darkness. This immersive experience allows us to appreciate the rainforest from dawn to nightfall, deepening our understanding of its complexity and the importance of conservation.

Meals:  B,L,D

We spend the morning at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, participating in a half-day conservation program that gives us a close up look at these remarkable primates. Through hands-on activities, we assist with enrichment and welfare programs, helping to create stimulating environments that support the physical and mental health of the orangutans. Along the way, we learn about the threats facing their habitat, including deforestation and human activity, and explore the broader efforts being made to protect these endangered species and their rainforest home. In the late afternoon, we enjoy a serene evening river safari, gliding along the waterways as the rainforest transitions to dusk.

Meals:  B,L,D

We drive to Sandakan, taking in the scenic landscapes of Sabah one last time as we reflect on our Borneo adventure. Along the way, we enjoy the passing views of rivers, forests, and villages, appreciating the diversity and beauty of the region we have explored. Upon arrival, there is plenty of time for a walking orientation of this port city and a chance to visit the numerous markets.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today has been set aside as a self-exploration day in and around Sandakan. Students have the opportunity to decide as a group how they would like to spend their day accompanied by their teachers and guide. They may choose to visit the Sandakan Memorial Park, a sight that was once a WWII Japanese POW camp, return toward Sepilok to visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre or take a day trip to Gomantong Caves. In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner at Sim Sim Floating Village. This unique dining experience allows us to enjoy fresh local cuisine in a remarkable waterside setting, celebrating the friendships, experiences, and memories made during our journey. The dinner provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on the conservation work, cultural immersion, and adventures we’ve shared as a group.

Meals:  B,D

We spend the morning at leisure, giving us the chance to explore Sandakan one last time, visit local markets, or simply relax and take in the surroundings. Later, we transfer to the airport for our onward flight, reflecting on the incredible experiences, friendships, and memories we’ve made throughout our Borneo adventure.
