  • Snorkel pristine reefs teeming with marine life on the Great Barrier Reef.
  • Walk around historic WWII remnants on Magnetic Island

Dive into a multi-activity learning experience combining culture, conservation, and outdoor fun around Magnetic Island in sunny North Queensland. The trip begins with a hands-on cultural immersion on Nywaigi Country led by local Aboriginal educators. Over the two night stay, students explore, play, and deepen their understanding of land, flora, fauna, and story. A ferry ride to Magnetic Island begins the next part of the trip. Students walk around historic WWII remains learning about the history of this island and it's role as a defense outpost. A highlight of this trip involves everyone trying their hand at being a marine biologist for a day - a unique educational boat tour where students learn about reef ecology and spending time snorkelling various sites with expert guides. There will be the opportunity to give back through a service-learning day dedicated to supporting habitat restoration and conservation projects with a local environmental organisation. This is an amazing six-day trip with a fantastic balance of activity, culture, history, marine education, and community service in one of North Queensland’s most vibrant landscapes.

After months of planning, the adventure finally begins! We fly into Townsville buzzing with excitement and meet our experienced guides at the airport. From here, we head to our Indigenous immersion for a full safety briefing and official Welcome to Country. We set up camp, share expectations, ask questions, and jump into activities that help us relax and connect as a group. As night falls, we gather around the fire, hear ancient stories, stargaze, and start to slow down to the rhythm of nature. Our North Queensland adventure is underway! Accommodation: Indigenous Immersion camping

We wake up on country to begin a full day of indigenous learning with our Nywaigi hosts. We spend time exploring the local rainforest, bushland, mangroves and the coastline. Through hands-on activities and shared stories, we gain a richer understanding of culture, knowledge, belief systems, lore and ways of living that sustained Nywaigi people for tens of thousands of years. In the evening we sit around the campfire again for an opportunity to reflect on our day and the gems of learning we have all discovered. Accommodation: Indigenous Immersion camping

This morning we bid farewell to our hosts and the land we've enjoyed exploring. It's time for us to head to Townsville and board the ferry to Magnetic Island - an island paradise of endless sunshine and sites to discover. We begin by setting off on the famous Forts Walk, exploring World War II remnants while keeping our eyes peeled for koalas. In the afternoon we'll have time to settle into our accommodation, explore the beach, and have a swim before finding somewhere pretty to watch the sunset. Accommodation: Magnetic Island Cabins

Today we take learning onto the water as we get to be a marine biologist for a day while on a marine education boat tour. Guided by professional reef experts, we explore the incredible marine ecosystems surrounding Magnetic Island, learning how coral reefs function and why they’re so important to protect. Then it’s time to jump in. Snorkelling over vibrant coral gardens, we come face-to-face with tropical fish and marine life in their natural habitat. As the day winds down, we return to shore, relax together, and spend the evening sharing stories, laughs, and highlights from an epic day on the reef. Accommodation: Magnetic Island Cabins

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we roll up our sleeves as we partner with Magnetic Island Nature Care Association to support in one of their projects. We may find ourselves weeding, helping with re-vegetation, or doing clean-ups - regardless it will be a meaningful way for us to learn about local ecosystems while contributing to long-term island conservation. In the afternoon we bid farewell to 'Maggie' as we board our ferry back to Townsville. As we share a final group dinner together, we also take the opportunity to share our highlights, thoughts, and learnings from an amazing experience in this beautiful part of the country. Accommodation: Townsville cabins.

Meals:  B,L,D

This morning, we will enjoy a relaxing stroll together along Townsville’s shoreline, soaking up the sea breeze one last time. We'll walk, chat, laugh, and savour the beautiful scenery before heading to the airport to make our way home.

Learning outcomes for students

World Expeditions Schools journeys are designed to encourage positive personal development and the learning of life skills, while leaving the communities and environments we travel to, in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to:
• Build strong friendships and bonds with their peers, their teachers, and the local people they meet.
• Increase the confidence to engage with new people, and collaboratively make informed decisions.
• Discover the benefits of working cooperatively together as a cohesive team, to achieve a common objective.
• Increase the ability to face, and cope with, mental and physical challenges and therefore increase resilience.
• Give students a chance to appreciate and care for the natural world. The environments we travel through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment.
• Learn personal skills i.e., time management, personal hygiene, responsibility for personal gear, patience, tolerance, and public speaking.
We help encourage students to learn what it means to be a true global citizen.
