Over 12 days you will make the most of this adventure playground with a combination of walking and paddling along with service learning focusing on the local community, habitat restoration and marine pollution. The adventure begins by exploring the Tasman Peninsula before moving on to the Freycinet Peninsula where you will be introduced to the islands indigenous history and culture and gain stunning views of the Hazards. We then head inland and drive to Launceston as we journey through the rugged North West. We have the opportunity to walk in the iconic Cradle Mountain National Park before summiting Mount Roland to gain incredible views over the surrounding plains. On arrival in Hobart we will be met by our local World Expeditions guide and drive 1.5 hours to the rugged sea cliffs of the Tasman Peninsula. On the way we stop at the famous Tessellated pavements, rock that is fractured into polygonal blocks that resembles tiles of a mosaic floor, and the Dog Line, a narrow 30 metre-wide isthmus that joins the peninsula to the rest of Tasmania. Once at Port Arthur we will enjoy a guided tour and access to more than 30 historic buildings, ruins, restored houses, heritage gardens and walking trails. Driving time: 1.5 hours

Today we will have a full service day learning about the local efforts for preserving the natural environment on Tasmania. Our hands on activities could include activities like forest science and research, the exploration of the carbon cycles, micro plastics in water, forests products, renewable and non-renewable resources, forest management practices, etc.

This morning we pack our bags and head to Hobart city for a first exploration of the old town centre and the harbour. After a brief city exploration we will transfer to the MONA - Museum of Old and New Art - certainly one of the highlights of the trip. It is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere and houses ancient, modern and contemporary art. Here we will have a guided tour of the museum and its surrounds.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we have a full day at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, a small social enterprise that works tirelessly to protect animals that went extinct in other parts of Australia long ago. Among them are four marsupials that can only be found in Tasmania and nowhere else in the world - the Tasmanian devil, the eastern quoll, the Tasmanian pademelon and the Tasmanian bettong. We have the chance to get up close to some of Tasmania's much-loved locals and endangered animals. Bonorong operates Tasmania's largest 24-hour wildlife rescue service and we will join in a workshop to see behind the scenes the fantastic work being done to help and provide safety and care to injured wildlife.

Today we will set our sights on the Freycinet Peninsula for the next 2 nights. Upon arriving at the picturesque Friendly beaches we will have the incredible opportunity to spend the next few hours with Trish from NITA Education, a Tasmanian Aboriginal Cultural educator. Trish will share with us the culture, history and heritage of her people. This will be an amazing time for learning and insight into such an important part of Tasmania’s and Australia’s history.

Today will see you taking on yet another exciting challenge. You will rendezvous with our rock climbing instructor who will teach you basic skills and help you attempt climbs that are suitable to your level of competency. This session will be within Freycinet National Park and conducted by a qualified professional. After Lunch you will leave the ropes behind and we will head to the small town Coles Bay, during which we will get our first glimpse of the areas brooding mountains which make up the Hazard range. Here we will meet our kayaking guides who will take us on the tranquil waters of the national park gaining impressive views of our surroundings. Climbing time: up to 5 hours | Kayak time: 3 hours

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we bid farewell to the stunning Freycinet beaches and turn inland, stopping along the way in the historic Campbell town. Our first stop upon arrival in Launceston will be the stunning Cataract Gorge. We keep the river on our right as we follow the trail upstream, gently rising to gain fantastic views of the gorge below. Upon reaching the Duck River Power Station – Tasmania’s first ever hydro-electric power station, we cross the river on a swing bridge, where we will find the old power station has been converted into an interactive museum. Here we can take a rest and watch a video of the history of the power plant – which has had a hard life being so close to a river prone to flooding. From here we climb back down the other side of the gorge from which we came and follow the trail downstream until we end back at first basin where we will enjoy a picnic lunch and spend some time in the afternoon relaxing in the manicured grounds and swimming in the inviting river. Driving time: 2.5 hours | Walking time 2.5 hours

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we will have a full service day helping the local community and conservation efforts. We will consult with the local community on the project in the months leading up to the journey.

Meals:  B,L,D

Departing Launceston, we first head to the Mole Creek Caves. We will have a private tour through one of the caves and learn all about the fascinating and uniquely fragile world of stalactites and stalagmites, sparkling crystals, reflection pools, delicate formations and colours. The climate inside the caves never changes, it's always 9 degrees year round, so dress warmly. After lunch we make our way by bus up to the stunning and iconic Cradle Mountain National Park.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we are spoilt for choice with a plethora of awe-inspiring walks. If weather permits the main objective for the day is to walk around Dove Lake, a picturesque lake directly beneath Cradle Mountain. The 6km track is one of the top walks in the park and it takes you through some of Tasmania's special vegetation, like buttongrass, myrtle, sassafras, fagus, King Billy pine and magnificent rainforest. Alternatively, we can explore the ancient rain forests and stunning views of Marion’s Lookout, Crater Lake or Hanson’s Peak, amongst many others. After our day of exploring we make our way back to our accommodation to enjoy a well-earned dinner.

Meals:  B,L,D

Today we leave behind Cradle Mountain and make our way out towards Mount Roland near Gowrie Park. tanding at 1233m above sea level Mt Roland provides a stunning backdrop to the town of Sheffield. The walk-up Mt Roland follows a vehicle track for a few kilometres before turning into a proper bushwalking trail. We pass by a couple of waterfalls and creeks on our way. After roughly an hour we cross a log bridge over O’Neill’s Creek. From here the trail becomes narrow and starts to steepen. Once we reach the plateau, we enjoy another hour of walking right on top of the plateau before reaching the summit. At the summit we are rewarded with 360 degree views to the Bass Straight, Cradle Mountain and Black Bluff! Returning back to the bus we then make our way back to our accommodation for the night.

Meals:  B,L,D

After packing up camp we will make our way back to Launceston once we know the time of the groups airport departure we can introduce some stops on the journey such as Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and Ashgrove Cheese Farm (They have local ice-cream!!) to wrap up our journey together. Fly to Melbourne.

Learning outcomes for students

A World Expeditions Schools adventure is a unique learning experience. Our journeys are designed to encourage thriving and positive youth development along with leaving the communities and environments where we travel in a better condition than when we arrived.
The programs are designed to enhance the following life skills that will help you grow as an individual:
• the confidence to lead a group and make decisions
• the value of working together as a cohesive team to achieve a common objective
• the ability to face mental and physical challenges
• the ability to adapt to new environments outside of their 'comfort zone'
• to appreciate and care for the natural environment. The environments we trek through are beautiful and often pristine, invariably the students will gain a deeper appreciation and understanding about how their individual actions impact on the environment
• build strong friendships and bonds with their peers and also the local peoples
• basic outdoor skills obtained on trek such as personal hygiene, pitching a tent, helping to prepare meals
Importantly our adventures help increase general well-being and build resilience in young men and women to help them deal with adverse situations in life.
