Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for Schools

Unlocking Potential Through Adventure: Duke of Edinburgh Programs for Schools

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award helps students grow in confidence, resilience, and leadership. For teachers, it provides a structured framework that fosters student transformation while aligning with curriculum and wellbeing goals. As a National Award Activity Provider, World Expeditions Schools works alongside teachers to design Adventurous Journeys and Residential Projects that meet Award requirements and make delivery stress-free. We manage the risk, logistics, and support, so you can focus on guiding your students through the experience.

“As the supervising teacher, I was able to focus on the well-being of my students, while staff managed the logistics from sunrise to sunset.” – Heather, Teacher, 2022

Adventurous Journey Programs Across Australia

Our Adventurous Journey programs put students in the lead – navigating, setting up camp, and preparing meals – while our experienced Guides provide the safety net. From remote escarpments to dramatic coastlines, these expeditions are designed to challenge and inspire.

Waterholes connect the dots along the Jatubla Trail | Oliver Risi

Jatbula Trail, Northern Territory

This program is about responsibility and resilience. Students carry full packs and take the lead in daily navigation, campsite selection, and meal preparation. The trail winds from Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls through a chain of pristine swimming holes and waterfalls. With Aboriginal rock art sites and stories from the Jawoyn people, it also builds cultural awareness. Teachers consistently remark that students return more independent and bonded as a group.

“The activity leaders were often experts in their field, which meant we were in excellent hands as we experienced various activities.” – Heather, Teacher, 2022

Larapinta Trail, Northern Territory

The Larapinta is one of Australia’s most iconic desert walks. Over four days students tackle steep ridgelines, narrow gorges, and remote desert camps. The sunrise ascent of Mount Sonder is a shared achievement that students talk about long after they return. Teachers value the balance between physical challenge and structured reflection time built into the program, which aligns well with leadership and wellbeing frameworks.

“The students’ experience was invaluable, and the camaraderie built within the group was evident throughout. The emotional growth and ability to embrace challenges were powerful for all students.” – Megan, Outdoor Education Coordinator, 2025

The Cape to Cape offers stunning coastal walking

Cape to Cape, Western Australia

This coastal classic combines beach walking, limestone headlands, and towering Karri forest. With centre-based accommodation in Margaret River, it offers comfort at night while still demanding long days on the track. Along the way, Guides introduce geology, biodiversity, and Indigenous cultural history. Teachers often see students step up to support one another through sand sections and steep climbs, building both confidence and camaraderie.

“Our guides were outstanding, particularly in the way they connected with students and built strong relationships while sharing deep knowledge of the natural environment.” – Tim, Teacher, 2024

Wild South Coast Way | Heidi Lewis

Wild South Coast Way, South Australia

Part of the Heysen Trail, this journey features rugged cliffs, remote beaches, and abundant wildlife. Students might spot whales, fur seals, or sea eagles along the way. The expedition requires planning and teamwork as food and gear must be carried into campsites not accessible by road. Teachers highlight this program for its balance of accessible distances with genuine expedition feel, making it an excellent first Duke of Ed journey for students.

“The program delivered an incredible adventure while encouraging our students to reflect on the ecological, environmental, and social impact of their actions.” – Nicola, Director of Experiential Learning, 2024

Walls of Jerusalem, Tasmania

This alpine trek immerses students in Tasmania’s high country. They carry full packs through button grass plains, glacial tarns, and ancient Pencil Pine forests. Summit attempts of Mt Jerusalem and Solomons Throne give students tangible goals, while the remote campsites demand resilience and self-management. Teachers note that students gain a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility in this fragile alpine ecosystem.

“The students developed resilience, teamwork, and gained meaningful insights into the alpine environment.” – Lisa-Marie, Outdoor Education Teacher, 2023

Six Foot Track, New South Wales

Easily accessed from Sydney, the Six Foot Track follows a historic route from Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. Over three days students cross farmland, river valleys, and forests, with the Bowtells Swing Bridge a highlight. The gradual climb to the Black Range teaches perseverance, while the caves at journey’s end give a celebratory finish. Teachers value this as a lower-logistics option that still delivers all the required outcomes of an Adventurous Journey.

“The thorough planning, organisation, and friendly approach from World Expeditions made this trip an enjoyable, safe, and memorable experience for everyone involved.” – Tim, Teacher, 2024

Great Ocean Walk, Victoria

Stretching along the Otway coast, this trek showcases dramatic cliffs, remote beaches, and the iconic Twelve Apostles. Students experience different ecosystems each day, from rainforest gullies to wild surf beaches. Campsites along the trail provide opportunities for students to cook, share stories, and reflect together. Teachers appreciate how the program ties naturally to environmental studies and geography, while also pushing students outside their comfort zone.

“The trip was well-organised, with seamless travel arrangements, excellent learning experiences, and activities that will stay with our students for a long time.” – Dailan, Curriculum Leader, 2024
“World Expeditions Schools have been coordinating travel programs to various locations for our school for over a decade, consistently exceeding expectations with their ability to innovate and enhance programs each year.” – Brooke, VCE Coordinator, 2024

Residential Projects with Global Impact

The Residential Project challenges students to step outside their familiar circles, work alongside new communities, and contribute to a shared goal. Our overseas projects give schools meaningful ways to connect students to global citizenship.

Cambodia: Build bio-sand water filters that provide clean drinking water to local families.

Malaysia: Support mangrove restoration and coastal resilience.

Nepal: Help develop greenhouses for sustainable farming in rural communities.

“The impact on our students was profound. From working alongside local communities on meaningful projects to gaining insight into Cambodia’s rich history and complex past, the tour offered experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime.” – Kate, Deputy Principal, 2025
